G'day All,
Don't let my name mislead you. I am an average sort of guy who has always been fascinated by the English language. It's not that I have even used it to any great extent, apart from writing letters (the old fashioned way with pen and paper) as I travelled the world. However, in my sixtieth year, after forty-four years working as an engineer tradesman, my wife and I decided to go to China to teach Oral English. It's probably been the most traumatic, fascinating and interesting thing that I have ever done. To be thrust into classes of 70+ students, with virtually no English skills, who think on a completely different wavelength; with myself having had absolutely zilch teaching experience. This just had to be a challenge, to say the least. Suffice to say that we have both survived, and we are coming to the end of our two year contract, with honours in that we have been invited to return to continue teaching. We are at present preparing to return to New Zealand for a bit of home cooking, but we have decided to return to China as soon as possible.
It would be interesting to compare notes with anyone out there who has had a similar experience, as those of you in the know will realise there are problems ( that I won't go into right now) which are peculiar to teaching in China that are seemingly insurmountable. Discussing these problems may not produce many solutions, but I will at least have the satisfaction of offloading and /or sharing them.
