In Italian we don't use "¡" and "¿". I put that "¡" just to emphasize my sentence. (And because I'm studying Spanish, too).

In Spanish they use these symbols at the beginning of a sentence to "tell" the reader that he/she has to pronounce a question/exclamation.
It is the only language (maybe Portuguese too) that uses them.

Example:

¿Como estás? (How are you?)
¡Estoy bien! (Fine, thanks!)
