What’s the difference?

1. I want to go home. I have fought have been fighting in this country for four years.

2. We professional soldiers are deployed across the world. I have fought / have been fighting in Europe for four years, and I might be redeployed in other places someday.

Why does the first one accept only the present perfect continuous tense while the other accepts both? Is it because the second one sounds more like a long term career?
