Travel English Telephone, Email and Face-to-Face Dice Game

Stage 1: Common face-to-face travel situations
Work in groups of two or three. Roll the dice twice and roleplay the situation that comes up
below, with you as you (the traveller) and your partner(s) as the staff in that situation, e.g.
the waiter.

First roll of the dice – who you are

communicating with

Second roll of the dice – what you need

to do

1. Bus station or train station
2. Car rental
3. Hotel
4. Restaurant
5. Taxi/ Taxi firm
6. Travel agent/ Airline

1. Asking for information
2. Booking/ Making a reservation
3. Changing something
4. Checking information
5. Making a complaint
6. Requesting

Stage 2: Common telephone, email and face-to-face travel situations
Do the same, but this time also roll the dice a third time to decide how you should
communicate:
1. Telephone
2. Telephone
3. Email
4. Email
5. Face to face
6. Face to face

Stage 3: Other travel situations
Without the dice, roleplay some more realistic email, telephone or face-to-face situations
for you, for example:

In a restaurant

Talking to a guide

At the hotel front desk

Negotiating/ Bargaining/ Haggling

Shopping

Taking a ferry, tram or shared taxi

You can do the same with non-travel situations if you can’t think of any (more) realistic
travel situations.
