Phrasal verbs storytelling game

Instructions for teachers

Students take turns using multi-word verbs to tell a story, carrying on until the story reaches a good conclusion. The game can be played with the particle cards and/ or the verb cards below. If you are using both, you can ask students to always use both together or you can let them use them separately if they want. Both idiomatic uses (phrasal verbs etc) and more literal meanings (of the verbs, particles or multi-word verbs) are okay.

They could then tell their story to other students.

Possible variations:

  • students get a point for each card that they use correctly (but their partner can reject any which aren’t used the right way)
  • to save cutting up, students tick off the words instead of using cards
