Is a rainbow brown? – is with colours mix and match

Instructions for teachers

There are two versions of this activity. The first version is given on one page to save paper and photocopying. However, the mix or match activity usually works best a book with the pages cut into flaps which are turned to make good and bad matches, perhaps with each student making a crazy match for the next person to fix. All the topics have at least one sensible colour and at least one silly colour, but note that some of the colours don’t go well with any of the options.

To make a book, you need to staple the pages together on side, and then cut through all the dotted lines.

After reading, students could draw suitable (colour) pictures on their own copy of the book. Another option is for each student to draw one picture of their favourite silly combination, instead of drawing pictures for every page.

They could also make their own versions of this mix and match activity.

Single page version

Make a question that your partner will definitely say “No” to like “Is a rainbow black?” and see if your partner can change it to a question that you say “Yes” to like “Is a bat black?” Then do the same with your partner’s crazy question. Take turns changing the other person’s question and then making your own strange question until the teacher stops you.
