Colours guessing game

Instructions for teachers

Cut up the cards together in pairs with the colour words connected to the objects above them, so that each card says “It’s a/ an… It’s (colour)”. Let a student choose one which they think is difficult for their classmates to guess the colour of by one of these options:

  • looking through them all spread out on the table
  • choosing one from the ones that were dealt out to them
  • taking three from the pack and choosing the trickiest one to guess

The read out just the name of the object and then ask “What colour is it?” They get one point for each time someone guesses wrongly. Guesses could be in the forms:

  • Is it (colour)?
  • It is (colour).
  • It is a(n) (colour) (object).
  • Is it a(n) (colour) (object)?

The other students must guess exactly the colour written on the card, not other possible colours. All the colours are possible in real life, but some are less common and so more difficult to guess.

Before starting, you could demonstrate that some cards are really easy to guess the colour of (e.g. “a brown box”) and some are quite tricky (e.g. “a pink piano”).

Variations

There is also a single-sentence version of the activity which is useful if you want to encourage the answer “It’s a (colour) (object)”. However, the person asking the question will have to be careful to only say “It’s a/ an (object)” as a hint, not repeating the colour word in the middle of the card. They also sometimes have to swap between “a” and “an”, e.g. if the card says “It’s an orange monkey” with “an” but the hint is “It’s a monkey” with “a”.

Single sentence version

Don’t say the colour when you tell the other people what object they should guess the colour of, instead just saying “It’s a zebra”, etc.
