I'd use and teach 'whether', but is 'if' wrong? Some would use it.

eh..if u sayin 'whether' innit supposed 2b lyk this==> i doubt whether hell be there(+ OR NOT) ? o_0...but on the other hand we cant use [if + future ] always 'if + present = present / future) or if + unreal past/ p.perfect)
