American football games begin with a kickoff and a kickoff eventually follows each touchdown. Two other kinds of kicks occur, too: a punt, which is a way to turn the ball over to the opposing team while disadvantaging them as much as possible, and a field goal, a way to get some points when a touchdown doesn't look possible.
