To me that "basic contradiction" seems entirely imaginary.
 
Perhaps we should discuss only the language used in the context of the original text here. We don't need to go into our own views—only to say what we understand the original text to mean.

For those asking about the grammar, I suspect this is part of a longer sentence, and sometimes in speech people run phrases onto each other and don't always construct grammatical sentences.

Try earlier- 3:42 is where he says it, so go back a few seconds for the context.
