I have worked with professor Mendelson who is specifically focused on curing the infectious diseases of marine mammals.

I have worked with professor Mendelson, whose focus is on curing the infectious diseases of marine mammals.

There are better words than focus, but I can't think of them at the moment.

I prefer treating to curing, or just omit the word. I don't think any specialist would claim to be able to cure all diseases.
