Can someone interpret the meaning of the underlined part?
"By far the greater number of the articles were shattered in the most extraordinary way — so chafed and roughened as to have the appearance of being stuck full of splinters..."

It means something like "to be covered with thousand tiny debris"?

It does seem that a tornado had just hit the place. If something is stuck full of splinters then it has been penetrated with shards of glass or wood or with nails or any number of things. (Ouch!)

:)
