Which of these two clauses is the correct one?

a) I want to eat that dish rather than eat the one cooked by your mom.

b) Everyone is helping the family rather than helping them.
 
Sentence a) is correct (note that they are sentences, not clauses).
Sentence b) doesn't make sense. Who does "them" refer to?
