Pronunciation of bass, /beɪs/ vs. /bæs/

I've heard both of them being used, the first one more often, the latter one as a joke in a sketch.

But are they both correct? :-o Or was the sketch to show that it's bad pronunciation and dumb? :lol:

There's also a tree called a basswood. The first syllable is pronounced like the fish.
