I can really tell the difference of meaning between putting "the" and not putting "the" in front of "Alps" through your confusion of understanding my sentence.
The mountain range in Europe is called the Alps, just as you call the Himalayas, the Rockies, the Appalachians, etc.
"Alpine" is an adjective which refers to things related to high mountains, not necessarily the Alps.
