Hello.

Why some exam papers use the past tense instead of present tense when writing instructions ( imperatives) In the following examples

1- Five added to six. Why not add to?

2-Six multiplied by three. Why not multiply by?

Why do some exam papers use the past tense instead of present tense?
They don't. This is the third form (past participle) of the verb used in the passive voice:

Six multiplied by three is eighteen.
Six (when it is) multiplied by three) is eighteen.

Thank you.

Are the unreduced form of the passive voice correct?

1- Six were multiplied by three equals eighteen.

2- One was added to three equals four.

I have never seen the full form of the passive voice used in math exam papers, but are they correct?

I've never even seen the shortened form. Surely test/exam papers use the relevant symbols, not words. I would expect to see something like:

Solve the following problems/equations:

a) 6 x 3 =
b) 124 - 25 =
c) 96 + 1,065 =
