1) I would rather be my kids someone who is unsuccessful and happy than be someone who is successful in people's eye and unhappy.

2) I would rather go Africa rather than go Afghanistan.

Have I use "I would rather do this than do something else"?

Here's another way to say what you mean:

I would rather my kids were unsuccessful and happy than successful and unhappy.
