What does it mean to "gather about someone"?

I am reading the book 'Stop Worrying Start Living' and I came across a line that was about a man who was wandering around a city and one day "One day a crowd gathered about him". What does it mean to "gather about him"?

@tufguy I've been trying to teach you how to learn things from context. So far I have been an utter failure.

You do know "a crowd" is people, right? Where were those people after they had gathered about him? Nearby, right?

I am sorry. It was new for me so I was a bit confused.

I'm pretty sure that's my point. When you see something that's somewhat new ask yourself makes sense in the given context. There are only going to be so many possibilities.

If you don't practice it you won't get good at it.

Let me give you a made up example. (See below.)

She blank blank blank, and she died. From that you know that the "blank blank blank" was lethal. You know that if you know nothing else.
