How common is "in the car" and "in a car" pronounced with the same pronunciation ?

If you listen carefully, they're not exactly the same.

The allophone you hear in "in the car" is a fronted /n/. It is fronted because /th/ is fronter than /n/.

n + th = fronted n

Thats the subtle difference between both pronunciations.

/ɪnðəkɑ:/ In the car (note you add -r/ at the end for AmE and other rhotic regions).
/ɪnəkɑ:/ In a car (same note).
