The consuls held veto power over one another. Neither consul could make a law without the consent of the other." The Romans never wanted power concentrated in one person again.

By the way, what the possible grammar tips to understand this sentence structure well?

Thank you!

It means that one consul alone could not make law. Only the two of them together could.

mehong, please note that a better title would have been Neither consul could make a law...

Thanks for the response!
Thanks for the reminder, too!

There is no need to write a new post just to say "Thanks". It makes us think there is new information or a follow-up question and we spend time opening the thread. Simply click on the "Thank" button at the bottom left-hand corner of any post you find helpful. It saves everybody's time.
:-D

Have the moderators ever considered creating a button to convey this very message?

I have lost count of the number of times I've opened a thread only to find someone telling someone else how not to waste everybody's time. Just an idea. ;-)
