Sorry if this is a really basic question but why should we write the word 'much' in the following sentence?

'This was not as fun as that'

'This was not as much fun as that'

To me they both mean the same. Thank you for any help :-D

'This was not as fun as that' - this is also correct (as Barb_D pointed out).
And I think you're right, there's no difference in meaning.
Please note that I am not a teacher and can be wrong.

If this is for school work, don't use "fun" as an adjective.

If it's been used as an adjective since 1846, I don't know why it's shunned.

However, you should feel free to avoid its use as an adjective if you wish. I will continue to embrace it as both an adjective and noun.

It's use as an adjective in BrE is much, much more recent than that, also it is informal in BrE, so it should not be used in a school/learning situation.
