This is an expression meaning he is weary of traveling.

Someone moving on a path would hear the crunch of the gravel when his shoes hit the stones.

I would tend to agree with Gillnet: living out of a suitcase suggests the writer is prepared to move at a moments notice: and has no security. The crunch of gravel is unlikely to be from a welcome visitor
