  • Are you working at the moment?
  • What did you do before that?/ Is this your first job?
  • How long have you been working there/ doing that job?
  • What would you like to do in the future?

  • Are you studying anything at the moment?
  • What did you study at university?
  • Is there anything that you’d like to study in the future?
  • What was your favourite subject at school?
  • Do you need any more qualifications for your future career?

  • Have you been to many foreign countries?

Ask about questions which you couldn’t understand, are not sure you answered well, etc.

Label the questions above with the topics and times practiced during the needs analysis.

Practise answering one question over and over, giving a slightly longer answer each time.

Give short answers to each question and see if your partner can come up with follow-up questions to make you say more.

Match these follow-up questions to the questions above.

  • Did you have any problems communicating there?
  • Why did you choose that subject?
  • Do you enjoy it?
  • What was your favourite place?
  • What do you think about it?

Practise a whole BULATS Speaking Part One. Interview your partner for approximately four minutes, in this order:

  1. Questions about themselves, where they live and where they work or study
  2. Questions about their work (if they are presently working) or studies (if they are a student)
  3. Questions about one of: travel, language learning, future career prospects or interests/ hobbies

Ask at least three or four questions about each topic, including follow-up questions (especially if their answers are short).
