What can I use instead of "amid" in this sentence?

"You're an idiot," said Jane amid tears of laughter.

Is there another way I can express this idea?

"Through" would be much better than "amid".

not a teacher

"amid" suggests the tears of laughter were from several people. Is that what you want to say?

No. Only her own tears of laughter.

What should I say?

Or with.
