You should see a mechanic.

What exactly does "see" in this case? I mean, I think not all the professions can follow this verb. One can see a doctor, a dentist, a lawyer, etc... Is it possible to say "You should see a teacher"? "A maid"? "A painter"? "A mechanic"?

I'd say see is similar in this sense to 'consult'.

So if you can consult someone, seeking their professional advice on a matter, you can 'see' them.

A parent could see a teacher to discuss their child's progress.

You have to actually see the mechanic for that person to work on your car. (Driving to the shop blindfolded wouldn't make much sense.)

That might be at least part of it.
