You've bought so much stuff, you should ask them to do you/give you/allow you a discount.

This sentence is taken from L. G. Alexander's RIGHT WORD WRONG WORD.

The author use 'you should ask...' in this sentence. But I had thought we should say 'you should have asked...'. What special idea does the author want to convey by using 'you should ask...'?
