You know that people actually like writing checks to Nobel laureates?
Morbius movie

Do they mean the same, writing and drawing checks/cheques?

No. technically, you draw cheques (BrE spelling) on a bank. You write them to a person.

I just came across this: "draw a cheque means to write a cheque". The source is based in Canada. Are they mistaken?

There is also this: "“You shall have them,” said he, “what a piece of virtú! “- So he drew me a cheque upon the spot, and took a sketch of my nose.".

I think the "writing cheque" part is used figuratively to mean people give a lot of money to Nobel laureates.

Here's another one: "... and when I asked her for some money, she willingly took her check-book and drew me a check for five thousand dollars.". This is from 'The Diamond Pin' by Carolyn Wells. I guess 'draw a check/cheque' is synonymous with 'write a check/cheque'.
