Dear all!
What is the exact meaning of words in bold in the following passage? It is from the book “Persian Gulf Command” by Ashley Jackson, p. 233. It is about suspicion among the Iranian and the Allied in World War ii when the Iran was occupied.
As for the upper class, only the Ali Mansours and a minority of the officials and professional people were really friendly.’ Skrine ascribed this anti- British sentiment to inflation, ‘and the consequent catastrophic rise in the cost of living, for which the Allied occupation is blamed. Another is our known disapproval of Persian methods and standards; we are suspected of contemplating annexation or partition which, they fear, would be the doom of the vested interests which control public opinion. A third, of course, is our unholy alliance with Russia.’ ‘One way to supplant Germany in the hearts of the Persians,’ Skrine averred, ‘is to show some signs of beginning to win the war.
Many thanks in advance.
