Can we way " work through a problem"? He worked through the literature bearing on the subject.. Is there any difference between the two "work through's"?

Yes, you can say that. No there's no difference. It means to take a large piece of work, and to work on it gradually until it's finished.
However, "I worked through the night" is a different concept.
