[Idiom] Wool and eyes?

Dear teacher,

The idiom "pull the wool over one's eyes" (q.v.) has been around, I believe, for a very long time.

I am interested in knowing the origin of this idiom, and even the country of origin, if known.

Greatly appreciate your help.
