Nothing is clearer than the fact that primi*tive man, whether in New Guinea today or eons ago in the prehistoric wilderness, is not and never has been a creature who peoples his world with bright fancies and lovely visions. Horrors lurked in the primeval forest, not nymphs and naiads. Terror lived there, with its close attendant, Magic, and its most common defense, Human Sacrifice.

Hi,
I have checked dictionaries but in spite of that I can't see what the blue word means there.
Would you please be nice enough to help me on that?

Thank you

In this context companion would be a good synonym for magic.

Thank you very much but this sentence really doesn't make sense to me.
[Terror lived there, with its close attendant, Magic, and its most common defense, Human Sacrifice.]
Would you please be kind enough to rewrite it a little simply?

I mean the words [magic] capitalized has made me confused and I don't know why it's capitalized. I even don't know it's an adjective or a noun in there.
That's why I can't understand the whole sentence.
Thanks in advance.

It means that forces of terror used magic to cause the horrors. I don't know why "Magic" is capitalized, but because "Human Sacrifice" is also capitalized, it might have been done for emphasis.

Terror, Magic and Human Sacrifice are capitalised because they are personified.

That was my first thought about Magic, but it does not seem to fit with Human Sacrifice.
