"Whom" in a relative clause when the preposition is at the end of the clause

Hello, could a sentence like this be correct?

I thought the man whom we talked about couldn´t hear us.

I know normally everybody would say "... man who we talked about...", but anyway, would the former sentence be OK?

... about whom we talked is very formal these days.
... who we talked about is normal. st least in BrE.
... whom we talked about is an ugly mix of registers.
