The student apologizes: „My grand auntie deceased last week.“

Three weeks later he is giving a similar excuse.

A third time, the teacher would beat the student to the punch:
„Who has deceased at this occasion?“
 
You'll need to use the right word if you're going to make a joke.

My great-aunt died last week.
Who died this time?

"Deceased" is an adjective.

My great-aunt has died.
My great-aunt died last week.
My great-aunt is deceased.
