Stinson is a fantastic writer. He (write) ... ten very creative short stories in the last year. One day, he'll be as famous as Hemingway.

I'm very confused between simple past and present perfect, I got this sentence from an exercise, I typed 'wrote' as an answer because it is a completed action in the past "last year" it turns out as an incorrect, can someone tell me why please?

If "wrote" was marked wrong I'd like to know what is considered correct.

I think 'has written' agrees with 'in the last year', which is used in the OP's sentence.

I would accept either tense in this context.

Please note that a better title would have been
He wrote/has written ten stories in the last year.

Extract from the Posting Guidelines:

'Thread titles should include all or part of the word/phrase being discussed.'

'in the last year' suggests to me that the year isn't finished yet. Ergo, the present perfect is used since it's a continued action from the past to present.

Had the sentence said 'last year', then only the simple past would work.

He wrote ten very creative short stories last year.

or

He has written ten very creative short stories over the last year.

Feel free to disagree.
