Next week we will take a collection to defray the cost of the new carpet. All those wishing to do something on the new carpet should come forward and get a piece of paper.

The above joke was quoted from web site,
could you please tell me where the humor is?

thank you in advance.

"Do something" could mean to help pay for the carpet. It could also mean those who want to have sex on the carpet.

***** NOT A TEACHER *****

(1) Thank you so much. It is hilarious (super funny).

(2) It could mean something like:

If you want to go to the restroom on the carpet, get a

piece of (toilet) paper.

(3) It should have said something like:

If you wish to help with the cost of the carpet, come

forward and fill out this form.

We all love those sentences that you give us. Laughter is,

indeed, good medicine.

I also thought of despoiling the carpet, but didn't catch the "paper" angle.

Cats and dogs 'do something on the carpet'. It means to go (to the toilet) on the carpet. Note the next line, "should get a piece of (toilet) paper".

Can we say do something FOR here?
