When someone has -20$ or less in his or her bank account?

What expression do we use in English when somebody has -20$ or less in his or her bank account?
 
They are 'in the red' or overdrawn when their balance is less than zero.
 
I'd say that person was broke.
 
I notice that subject belong to the daily life, when you got paid in that circumstance that's a relief and then anybody try to figure out how to avoid that unpleasant situation.

It's probably "the end of the month"! ;-)
