When David's parents came for a visit for five days, he and his wife slept on a sofa in a living room while his parents were sleeping in a double bed. David had offered to pay for them a hotel room, but the parents had kindly declined, telling him that they wanted to be close to him instead of sitting in some nondescript hotel thinking of him.

If they only had one sofa, then the sofa works better for me. And pay for a hotel room for them.
