I'm trying to describe a situation when a person is on sinking ship. They can hear many people screaming from different directions.

Are these good?

1. Robert heard a cacophony of piercing screams coming from all directions. He could feel the screams in his bones.

2. Robert heard a chorus of screams piercing the night as the ship sank.

I like the first one. I think it's just right. But "a chorus of screams" suggests to me that it's organized somehow. So I wouldn't use the second one. (It's a close call.)

How about "it was pandemonium on the sinking ship"?

Yes pandemonium is another option but I want to mention screams.

Perhaps:

The screams filled the air.

Work that in there somehow.

Now I know why I couldn't sleep last night. It was all that screaming.
;-)
