[General] What does "what's cracking" mean?

Hello.

I found the sentence "what's cracking?" on a movie.

Is this used as a greeting like " What's up? or how things going?"

What would you answer to the question "What's cracking"?
 
The same thing you would answer to "What's up?"

Normally something like "Not much, what's up with you?"

Unless you had something really important to announce or were in some strange situation that required an explanation of "what's up?"
 

Why must we use "heard" even when we saw that sentence in the subtitles of the movie? And I think in that case, we can use "found"?
