I'm trying to describe a situation when a person was scared and their fear began to subside.

Can I use "heart slowed down" or does that connote sickness or fainting?

This is the sentence:

Jack sprinted up the stairs. It was quiet there. He sat down, his pounding heart beginning to slow down as his fear subsided a bit.

If not, how can I express the idea that a person's fear was beginning to dissipate?

Personally, my heart would be pounding just from running up the stairs!

Good to see you back here Charlie. They should remove Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from the calendars! That way, you will be here on all days. :)
