What does endorsement or indorsement mean?

Endorsement, or indorsement, is the act of expressing support, approval, or agreement with something or someone. It can also refer to a formal statement or signature on a document, such as a check or a legal contract, indicating that the person here who signed it agrees to the terms and conditions outlined in the document.

I've never seen "indorsement" in BrE.
 
As far as I know it's hardly ever used in American English. (indorsement)
 
Although that's a common way of listing alternate spellings, I actually had to look it up to verify it really was an acceptable (albeit uncommon) alternate spelling.

Some sources claimed 'indorsement' is restricted to financial documents only. I'm kind of surprised the article bothered to list the alternate if it really is that uncommon. It was certainly new to me. I was going to chalk it up to a gap in my knowledge, but now it sounds like nobody else is familiar with it either.
