A "con man" is a person who attempts to cheat you out of your money. It is short for "confidence trickster."

In other words, he gains your confidence in order to deceive you.

A con man is usually charming and believable. Only later do you realize you have been taken for your money.

It could be an elaborate scheme like an investment "Ponzi scheme" or as simple as someone meeting you on the street with a sob story about needing money to buy gasoline.
