"Dystopia signals the wearing off of the faith in technological and political progress that the seventeenth-century “Age or Reason” and the eighteenth-century Enlightenment had given birth to."
Wanted to know if the highlighted text is grammatically correct? Is it a standard expression? Thanks.

The seven words together don't make up a fixed expression. Does it help to know that "wearing off" here is a noun?

People's faith in ... was wearing off ... (In that reorder of the sentence, "wear off" is a phrasal verb.)

Thank you, but is it grammatically acceptable to say, "Dystopia signals the wearing off of the faith in technological and political progress."
