Have I used i.e. correctly and naturally?

We did further research at school, i.e. lab testing and imaging. We then consulted our biology teacher for a more accurate assessment.

I'm afraid that was worse. :-( I've fixed it above.

You can (and should) replace "i.e." and the punctuation with a colon.

I see. I thought I don't need comma after "i.e.". I checked 3 dictionaries:

So, do you think "i.e." is wrong in my sentence or unnatural? Is it better to use a colon?
