Hello, dear forum users!

1.Penicillin was discovered by accident.
2.Penicillin has been discovered by accident.

I dare to think that sentence 1 is correct. But since there is no exact time given in these examples, will it be Ok to use Present Perfect as well, like in sentence 2?
 
1 is correct. It's a historical event, so the simple past tense is correct.
