The voice in that commercial was believed to be that of Mr K Johnson, but it has since been proven wrong.

Is my sentence correct grammatically? "was believed", then followed by the present perfect tense.

The tenses are correct. What does "it" refer to?

"it" refers to the voice in that commercial that was believed to be Mr K Johnson's.

Is it incorrect to write like this?

Yes. It is not the voice that has been proven wrong but the belief that the voice was that of Mr Johnson. 'It' cannot refer back to that.
Another word can do that, though. Can you find what it is, Oceanlike?

Yes. It is not the voice that has been proven wrong but the belief that the voice was that of Mr Johnson. 'It' cannot refer back to that.

Oh yes! It refers to the "belief".

So, this means that my sentence has been structured incorrectly?
- "The voice in that commercial was believed to be that of Mr K Johnson, but it has since been proven wrong."

How should I rewrite it correctly?

What is the source of the quoted sentence, Oceanlike?
