"I waltzed/cruised through my compulsory exams and started on my reaserch in my second year." OK?

OR

"I thought we were going to walz/cruise through an economic slump but it didn't work out." OK?

Hi ostap77

As a NES, but not a teacher, I would have no problems with either sentence (except the first "cruise" should read "cruised").

Hope this helps

Check the spelling of waltz (and change to the past as Route21 says). The meaning's OK.

Would "coast through" be a synonym for the above mentioned?

Yes, you can coast through if you can do well without trying hard. You can also breeze through..
