[Grammar] Verb preposition and object

Please help me understand it. " I went to my friend" . Here, 'went' is a verb, 'to' is a preposition , what is 'my friend'? It can not be Adverb because it is not answering HOW/ WHERE /WHEN. It can not be an object since GO is an intransitive verb. Kindly help

There is one major problem with your post/question and that is that "I went to my friend" is an unlikely sentence. What do you think it means?
 
my friend is a noun phrase.
