In the sentence"These lessons were often taught to me my my extremely strict drill sergeant.
Is the word strict a verb and extremely an adverb?

***NOT A TEACHER***I believe that "strict" is an adjective that modifies "drill sergeant." What kind of drill sergeant? A strict one. "Extremely" is an adverb that modifies the adjective "strict." How strict? Extremely. Thank you.

strict is an adjective
extremely is an adverb because it modifies an adjective not a noun
as I know
;-)

In your sentence, "strict" is adjective, as it qualifies the Nominal-Compound "drill seargent". The word "extremely' is an adverb, that modifies the following expression.

You're right.

(I think Ron may have misread it.)

Yes. For some reason I thought the poster was asking if "strict" is an adjective.

(I know that's what I thought, but at this point I can't explain why. (Maybe being on a shared computer can account for such mistakes. (Looking over one's shoulder. That sort of thing.)))

:-?
