Use one part to refer to the whole of something

Is it common to use one part to refer to the whole of a team (synecdoche)? For instance, the writer here uses a kit and colour (red/white/blue, etc) to refer to one team.

Arsenal's pressing is impressive. Spurs are pinned inside their own half before a moment of respite after a red and white shirt gives away a free-kick.

 
It is clear that "a red and white shirt" means somebody on that team. (I'm not sure which one it is.)
